βThe two districts in Toronto were considered safe Liberal strongholds, and they won handily, providing Carney with at least 173 seats and a majority government. The majority assures prime minister Carney's government a stronger position in parliament and provides support on major nation building projects as well as his government's dealings on trade and tariff issues.β
Aging demographics drive long-term demand for elder care
βThe population is aging and you think about what does that mean for the secular trends in investing? Because there's 10,000 baby boomers that turn 65 every day in the US and that trend continues through 2030, meaning the demand for elder care, for home health, for hospice and end-of-life services, it's essentially guaranteed to grow.β
βThe market is just a giant derivatives trade. It's what happens when everything gets so centralized and everyone's asset management looks the same. If you have this beta neutral book, that's generally a lot of hedge funds, that's the guys moving the books around. And it's a lot of like, they do things in unison as much as they think they're original thinkers.β
βIt's not only the overall Iranian economy that's dependent on this revenue, it's particularly the government and within that, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps which gets almost all of its revenue and thus its ability to pursue the war from oil exports.β
Eric Swalwell resigns amid sexual misconduct allegations
βSwalwell has been at the center of controversy since last Friday after at least four women spoke with the San Francisco Chronicle and CNN about experiences ranging from unwanted sexual advances by Swalwell to allegations of rape. NPR has not independently verified the allegations, and Swalwell has forcefully denied them. He repeats that in his latest statement, but goes on to say it's, quote, wrong for my constituents to have me distracted from my duties.β
Hollywood elite protest massive Paramount-Warner merger
βThe letter was signed by Hollywood directors and actors, among them JJ Abrams and Denis Villeneuve, Bryan Cranston, Glenn Close, and Jane Fonda. As founder of the relaunch committee for the First Amendment, Fonda has posted videos opposing the $110,000,000 deal by media mogul David Ellison backed by his billionaire father Larry Ellison. The idea of the whole entertainment industry being run by one company, that doesn't seem good.β
Israel and Lebanon move toward official ceasefire negotiations
βAnd then there's the ceasefire between Lebanon and Israel. They're even agreeing to meet together at, I don't know, Islamabad. I don't know where they're willing to meet to have the negotiation. And Trump said if the deal gets done, he's willing to go to get the ceasefire done, not the ceasefire, the negotiation done. By the way, this blockade is working so effectively. They're saying it's more powerful than what they're doing with their weapons.β
βThe US Navy needed to do was reverse the dynamic, make sure that it wasn't the Iranians who were controlling traffic through the Strait, but that it was the US Navy that was. And that sounds like a fairly straightforward process given the size of the US Navy. But in fact, it turns out, it's looking like it will be pretty complicated to execute.β
Persistent inflation remains a threat to consumers
βInflation is going to continue. The Fed's not going to get in front of it. So who's left holding the bag here? And it's regular people. And then he looked at the Michigan Consumer Sentiment Index, all time lows in consumer sentiment. Where does that track? Tracks into the midterms.β
βWe saw this truth social post that the president had posted literally minutes before we were all waking up where he attacked the pope as weak on crime and a tool of the radical left. He even talked about how he preferred the Pope's brother, who apparently is a Trump supporter.β
βBut then as he has spoken out about war, it has been perceived by the Trump administration as more and more a direct attack. And certainly after the war began against Iran, the pope has increasingly been making more pointed comments about the need to return to dialogue and the abhorrence for war.β

βUS. District Court Judge Darren Gales wrote that Trump had failed to allege sufficiently that the journal had acted with what's called actual malice, either knowledge of story is or failure to seek the truth. Gales found the journal had made numerous efforts to verify its reporting and included Trump's denial.β
Trump's Hormuz blockade increases global oil market stability
βThis blockade is working so effectively. They're saying it's more powerful than what they're doing with their weapons because there was apparently a Chinese vessel... and you actually have to see how the military tells them to other ships. Turn your ass around and go the other way. We're going to blow your ass up. That's kind of like how they said military language. They're younger. They talk like that, but it was a lot more diplomatic on the way they did it.β
Infrastructure damage threatens long-term energy production
βI'd say a third big category of risk is that Iran responds by restarting attacks on energy infrastructure throughout the Persian Gulf. That is one that carries really long-term risks for the global energy system and the global economy, because as you do more damage to the region's infrastructure, prevent refineries from operating, you risk taking energy offline for a long period of time.β
βIsrael says that it will have full control of the Lebanese town of Bin Shabeel, quote, within days. The town has become the center of intense fighting. It's part of land that Israel says it's seizing from Lebanon to create what it calls a buffer zone so Hezbollah can't fire rockets into Israel.β
βThe dollar seems to be structurally flawed in the sense that even a bigger oil moved this year than 2022, but a much smaller dollar move. And so that when you look at correlations over the last week or two, it's very clear a lot of this has come on the back of the dollar getting pushed lower.β
Markets remain resilient despite Middle East geopolitical instability
βEven with the Iran war, a Hormuz blockade, oil topping 100 and failed peace talks, the stock market has shown remarkable resilience, leaving many investors puzzled and cautious in equal measure. We will dig into what's really holding markets up and whether the resilience is a sign of strength or dangerous complacency.β
βYou cannot have a Iran. Pope Leo would not be happy with the end result. You have hundreds of millions of people dead, and it's not gonna happen. So I can't, I think he's very weak on crime and other things. So I'm not I mean, he he went public. I'm just responding to Pope Leo.β
βI have no fear that neither the Trump administration are speaking out loudly about the message of the gospel. I don't think that the message of the gospel is meant to be abused in the way that some people are doing. And I will continue to speak out loud against war.β
Software stocks experience a significant relief rally
βSoftware remained the standout story of the week with the IGV up nearly 13% over the past five sessions, a remarkable snapback for one of the most pressured areas of the market in recent months. Private credit has also bounced pretty sharply this week, easing another overhang.β
Hegsethβs religious rhetoric triggered Vatican response
βOnce Pete Hegseth invoked the name of Jesus Christ in asking for a victory for the American side, he was basically saying he was asking God to take sides. I think that really upset the Pope, and it was highly unusual for a government official to use a religious figure to justify war.β
Controversial adoption video sparks debate over family structures
βThere's a video that's just such a disturbing video. I don't even want to play it, but we have to play it with this, you know, a gay couple who are apparently in Hollywood. They're the award-winning type of couple. And they're holding this boy that I think they just adopted. And the boy is asking for mom. And he starts crying. It's a very, very difficult video to watch, but we'll watch it. I've always had a problem with this.β
βThe policy is pump stock market. That's what it is. I feel like there's room here for them to do something. Obviously, the cost that we just talked about is inflation. But who cares about inflation if the stock market is going up, right?β
βThe NAR is revising its housing forecast down for the year. That's because the war with Iran has raised the cost of borrowing, and that sent mortgage rates up. The association went from rejecting a double-digit increase in existing home sales to just 4%. New home sales are projected to be flat.β
Retail is aggressively chasing strength with calls
βRetail's chasing the strength hard, buying on their platform is unusually aggressive for an up day. They're in the 90th percentile in call buying now. So now, retail is chasing to the upside calls, which is like, that's where you just got to step back and be like, okay, this got really wild.β
Jet fuel shortages loom as maritime buffers vanish
βBecause ships take a long time to travel by sea, the world had a bit of a buffer insulating importers from shortages, but that's gone now. The last ship carrying jet fuel from the Persian Gulf to Europe arrived last week, reports the commodity intelligence group, Argus. There are no more on the way right now.β
βPresident Trump says the US has begun a blockade of Iranian ports. He's trying to get Tehran to open the Strait of Hormuz and accept a deal to end the war. We can't let a country blackmail or extort the world, because that's what they're doing. They're really blackmailing the world. We're not going to let that happen.β
βIt's possible that fighting could start again if Iran starts hitting US warships or commercial ships trying to transit through the Strait Of Hormuz or attacking the energy sector of Gulf allies. The Iranians have said they have major untouched levers to pull in response to the blockade, but we don't know what that means. At this point, it's an economic war trying to get Iran back to negotiating cable.β

Young men are increasingly turning toward religious faith
βThe Gallup poll showed 42% of men ages 18 to 29 say religion is very important in their lives. That's up 28%, okay? That's a huge jump and people are leaning into faith. And if you want to represent that, guys, go to vtmerch.com. The supply is really limited. These things are gonna go fast, guys. I walked into the studio today and already four people dead. Everybody's like, yo, when am I getting my hat? So this is it, guys. Faith over fear.β
βOne major risk, of course, is that the IRGC and Iran itself lashes out. They have threatened to attack these US Navy ships, and so you could have a major escalation of the fighting again based over the ships coming into the strait or even standing back outside.β

βUnder Catholic teaching, this is not a just war. We're dehumanizing the victims of war by turning the suffering of people and the killing of children and our own soldiers into entertainment. It is sickening and goes against the fundamental message of the gospel.β
Avoid investing in IPOs during their first trading year
βOne of the easiest ways to achieve that goal is not investing in new IPOs until they've been trading for a year. Not just because of what's going on with the company, what's going on with trade volume, you also have insider shares locked up for 160 days. There's just a lot of dynamics going on that drives prices that are distinct from the fundamentals of a company.β
China trade relations face significant blockade disruption
β90 percent of the oil that Iran ships out is headed to China. Much of it is on Chinese crewed, Chinese flagged ships. The president's supposed to go to Beijing in about four weeks, and what he was hoping was going to be this meeting all about a new detente between China and the United States.β

βThen there's something else going on called the Stop Nick Shirley Act. Can you imagine? They don't want people to be exposed in California. And so they're coming out with this thing called the Stop Nick Shirley Act, which, you know, it is what it is. We applaud Nick for what he's doing. He's doing a great job out there. We hope he continues and he keeps getting funded by others that are supporting what he's doing as a young man, putting himself on the line.β
